Women of different generations standing together

The Seen Beyond Foundation · Founded by Sarah Cannan

Every woman deserves to be seen — beyond what she has survived.

Beyond domestic and sexual abuse. Beyond period poverty. Beyond endometriosis, menopause and the invisible illnesses no one talks about. Together, Ayrshire can look closer.

Our mission

To make the unseen impossible to ignore.

"So many women carry things quietly — abuse, illness, pain the world calls invisible. Seen Beyond exists so no woman has to carry them alone"— Sarah Cannan, Founder

Seen Beyond stands with them. We raise awareness and funds for the causes women too often live through in silence: domestic and sexual abuse, period poverty, endometriosis, menopause and the invisible illnesses that shape daily life.

Across Ayrshire, 100 women a month are referred to Women's Aid. Behind each referral is a life — a mother, a daughter, a colleague, a friend — asking to be seen.

01

Domestic & sexual abuse

Funding refuge, advocacy and the quiet, urgent work of Women's Aid. All funds will go direct to Women's Aid across Ayrshire in support of their vital work. In respect of all violence against women, referrals went up across all services in East Ayrshire alone by 11.5% in 23-24.

02

Raising awareness of Period poverty

No woman or girl in Ayrshire should miss school, work or dignity. In 23/24 the national average of children under 16 years old living in relative poverty, after housing costs, was 19.1%. This results in all three local authorities in Ayrshire and Arran having a higher percentage than the Scottish average.

03

Raising awareness of Endometriosis

1 in 10 women in Ayrshire will be affected by this disease — there are approximately 190,000 women in Ayrshire. Diagnosis can take between 7-10 years. It's a chronic, whole body disease rarely understood.

*Office of National Statistics and National Records of Scotland 2024.

04

Raising awareness of Menopause

There are between 35 - 45,000 women in Ayrshire of menopausal age. The changing age of the UK's workforce means that between 75% and 80% of menopausal women are in work and it is estimated that 1 in 6 women will be over 50 in the workplace, in the near future. In South Ayrshire Council circa 73% of their employees were females, of which circa 37% were aged 45 or over.
